UK Skilled Worker Visa

Skilled Worker

Skilled Worker visas (formerly Tier 2 General) are designed for individuals who have received a job offer for a skilled position in the UK. To apply for a Skilled Worker visa, you must have a Sponsor—a UK employer holding a valid Sponsor Licence, capable of issuing you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). Initially granted for up to five years, Skilled Worker visas can be extended through a renewal application.

At Provisas, we possess extensive expertise in both Skilled Worker visas and Sponsor Licences, facilitating a seamless and stress-free recruitment and hiring process for both employees and employers.

  • The Skilled Worker visa is designed for individuals who have obtained skilled employment in the UK, replacing the Tier 2 General visa. This visa is for those employed by a UK sponsor.

  • To apply for a Skilled Worker visa, you need:

    1. Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): Obtain a CoS from a UK-based employer listed on the licensed sponsors register on the gov.uk website. The CoS is an electronic record with a unique reference number and details about your job, contract duration, and salary.

    2. Appropriate Salary: Meet the minimum salary requirements, which vary by job. Current salary rates can be found [here](link to salary rates).

    3. Knowledge of English Language: Demonstrate English proficiency of at least B1 on the CEFR scale. This can be proven by passing a relevant test, being a national of a majority English-speaking country, or holding a degree taught in English.

    4. Maintenance: Show savings of at least £945 held for 90 days before applying, or have your sponsor act as a guarantor, as noted on the CoS.

  • Skilled Worker visas are issued for the duration specified in the contract on the Certificate of Sponsorship, plus one month, with a maximum initial period of five years. Applicants have the option to extend their visas within the Skilled Worker category, reaching a maximum cumulative period of five years.

  • Applicants must adhere to the responsibilities detailed in their Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for the job associated with their initial visa. If changing employers or roles within the same organization, a new Skilled Worker visa application is required.

Under certain conditions, holding a Skilled Worker visa allows for secondary employment. Additionally, visa holders may undertake studies as long as it does not interfere with their sponsored job. Self-employment is also permitted within the Skilled Worker category under specific circumstances.

  • Applicants can include partners and children under 18 on this visa. These family members will be granted the same duration as the main applicant and will have the right to work or start their own businesses in the UK.

  • Yes, a Skilled Worker visa can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). After five years of continuous lawful residence under a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for ILR, provided you continue to be employed by a licensed sponsor. You must also meet specific requirements, including the minimum salary thresholds, the Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK, and ensure that you haven't been outside the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period.
